Gracie Update

January 22, 2008

Hello everyone! Today I got a new update on Gracie. I got two pictures and a report of her progress in school. I think these were taken on Jan 7 and Jan 8 based on the photo’s file name.

The first picture looks like she just came in from the cold! She second picture she looks much happier (she she is standing in front of a Christmas tree).  I am very happy to say that her report is great and she is really improving.  It says she loves coming to school, she is now talking with the other students, is participating, she knows basic shapes, colors, and can count to ten! In her first report most of the columns were checked off in the “unable or never” column. Now most of her checks are in “confidently or improving”. This makes me so happy. This shows how important our fundraiser was and how much help it has given her.

As you may know, I have a shop on Etsy. I have been working on a special handbag and $10 from every bag sold will go towards Gracies next sponsorship so she can stay in school. Right now I have seven bags made but I need to sewn many more! When I put them on Etsy I will make a post about it.

Also, I still have not sent the package. With the holidays I was unable to pay for the shipping cost. I think I will be shipping everything a little at a time. This way it won’t cost so much up front.  I’ll let you know in the next post.

Emma likes to dance!

January 1, 2008

I got another report on Emma’s progress. Here are some cute pictures of her dancing! This was the photo caption from the man who checks in on the foster children, “I can rock my buns, left, left, right, right, go, turn around. Go! Go! Go!” Click to see them larger.

Here are some of Emma’s updates:

“Little Emma is active, smart and beautiful. She likes playing outside with other buddies. She couldn’t walk steadily when entering the family. But now she can run fast.”

“Little Emma has almost full teeth and can speak and run. She can eat by herself. This time she has learned something. She can follow some simple instructions, such as squat yourself down, clean your mouth, stand up. The moment I left her home, she even waved goodbye to me. She is great, isn’t she?”

Package Complete!

December 29, 2007

Today I finished shopping for Gracie’s preschool. Many thanks to Connie and Francesca for each sending a box of goodies for the children. When I decided to do this and LWB said they really needed books, I made my main objective to find books. Well I ended up doing a little more shopping! But I spent lots of time in local thrift stores sitting on the floor flipping through pages of children’s books looking for good ones. I got good deals and ended up with 34 books and spent less than $10! Here is a list and photographs of everything I will be sending to the preschool.

– Nine puzzles consisting of pictures, numbers, and shapes
– 24 little buckets of play dough
– pencils, markers, crayons, paint, paintbrushes, and stamps
– 6 hand drums
– 6 play sets containing kitchen/food toys and a doctor set
– 4 containers full of foam stickers
– 2 containers full of foam beads
– flashcards
– 6 scissors
– 12 rulers
– a clock that is also a puzzle
– a book of 700 stickers
– 34 picture/story books

Pretend Food & Play Sets

Lots of Goodies

Now I have to find a way to ship all of this to China without it costing a fortune haha. I’m going to try and work out a deal with the lady at the local shipping center. Wish me luck!

Christmas Card

December 24, 2007

Love Without Boundaries sent me this special card. I scanned it so you can see/read it too. The cute little mitten was painted by Gracie. She must be a minimalist painter ;). I’m going to put some ribbon on it to hang on the tree. It’s very special having something she made at school. Thank you to all who participated in the fundraiser. Have a great Christmas!

Gracie got a new coat

December 13, 2007

Copy & Pasted from the LWB Blog, “As it has gotten colder here in the US, it has also gotten colder in Anhui, China. Just in time for the changing weather, every child participating in BIM III are sporting brand new coats to keep them warm. As you can see from the smiles, I think they like them! Thank you education sponsors for keeping these children comfortable so they can experience the gift of learning. You make it possible!” Below is Gracie in her new blue coat!

I am still accepting donations for her preschool. Please read the previous post for details.

Gifts for BIM3

December 7, 2007

Believe In Me Three is the preschool our Gracie is in. I have asked Love Without Boundaries if we could send a package of goodies to the students. She said yes! Here is a list of items that would be good for the children:

  • early childhood books. They recommend ‘Wild Animal Baby’, “Brown Bear, Brown Bear…”, “Fish Eyes”, “I Like Me”, “Rosie’s Walk,” “The Foot Book,” “Green Eggs and Ham”, and counting books. The books can not have religious, political, family or wealth mentioned in them. Lightweight paperbacks are best. Choose books that are age appropriate for preschoolers. Also pick books that aren’t very wordy because the books get translated.
  • puzzles
  • lacing toys
  • a Judy clock (certain type of teaching clock)
  • shapes for sorting
  • graphing tools
  • fine motor manipulation
  • pretend items (food, dress-up, anything)
  • play dough
  • cutting tools

Places like the dollar store, discount stores, and Target’s dollar section are great places to find school supplies and small toys. Consignment/Thrift stores are great places to find inexpensive books, just make sure they are in good condition. eBay and Amazon also have books for great prices and you could get the item shipped directly to me.

If you would rather donate money and have me do the shopping & shipping that would also be great. You can click here to donate via PayPal.

If you want to include items in the package you can email me at I will give an address to ship your things to. Then I’ll combine everything and ship it to China! When buying items try to find things that are on the smaller size and are lightweight. I don’t know how expensive it is to ship to China so lets make it as light as possible.

November 30, 2007

Today I have received a very sweet update on Emma. She is doing so well in her new foster home.

This is the email I received today:

I am attaching your first report on your sponsored child, Emma. Our monitor did a very good job getting developmental information on the children as well as a cute story and picture. The children are adjusting well to being in their families and it sounds like they are benefiting from the more individualized care they are receiving. Some comments that appeared frequently in the reports were “likes to embrace” and “not choosy in food”. That just warms my heart, to know they are being well-fed and shown affection! Some one has asked about the building they are in, so I asked the Foster Care Director who visited the orphanage in October what it was like. Apparently the apartments are set up like duplexes, with one family living on the bottom floor and one on top. The duplexes are built around a concrete courtyard. There are small plots outside the duplexes where the families have small vegetable gardens, and a few flowers. Their apartments are roomy and spacious. I was also happy to see some of the children in strollers and outside, completely bundled up. Temperatures are already quite cold in China!
Please feel free to contact me if you should have any questions about your sponsorship. May you be blessed during the holiday season, knowing you are making a wonderful difference in the life of your sponsored child!

For her privacy, I will not post the report I was given on her. But here are a few little facts that were included:

“She eats almost very food offered and has never been choosy in food”
“She couldn’t walk steadily when entering the family, but now she can run fast.”
“Emma has almost full teeth and can speak and run.”

click the photo of her to see the larger size. She is beautiful!
